A definition of a “Renaissance man” if there ever was one, native Hoosier Earl Townsend Jr. was an attorney, pioneering broadcaster, philanthropist, collector, and historian. In addition to being Gerald Ford’s roommate at the University of Michigan and announcing the first televised broadcast of the Indianapolis 500, Townsend was also inducted into the Council of Sagamores of the Wabash and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. An artifact collector from 1920 onwards, Townsend’s passion ultimately resulted one of the largest and most significant collections of prehistoric North American stone artifacts, with particular interest in birdstones, flints, and bannerstones.

Birdstones were Townsend’s primary object of interest, collection, and study; so much so, he published the preeminent reference book on the subject, Birdstones of the North American Indian, in 1959. His personal collection of birdstones exceeded 600. The Townsend Collection 2 will feature  “The Smithsonian Bird,” a prehistoric porphyry granite birdstone that is considered the finest so far discovered. This birdstone acquired its name while being held by the Smithsonian National Museum in Washington, D.C., from whom Townsend acquired the piece in the 1950s.

The Sardis Lake Indian Artifact Show was truly an experience of a lifetime!  I would like to give a warm thank you to each and every participant and collector that attended the 1st Annual Sardis Lake Indian Artifact show.  Located in Oxford, MS at the Oxford Conference Center, the 120 display table event held many great collections for all of us to be captivated and mesmerized by.

This first show in Oxford, MS was a huge success!  Thanks to our many participants and many guests, the Sardis Lake show has a bright future for the years to come.  I look forward to what Oxford's 2011 event will attain.

Show Review:

Nashville GIRS Show – A Show Worth Writing About!

Like many collectors, I attend several artifact shows each year in different parts of the country.  Some shows I attend are good buying shows were it seems deals can be had on all kinds of different types of relics and I go with buying on my mind.  Other shows I attend are more social in nature where I can see some nice old relics, maybe buy a piece or two for my collection, but mostly I am attending to visit and socialize with my collector friends who I know will also be there.  While the internet may have replaced a lot of the purchasing that used to go on at shows and in person, it can never replace the social and educational aspect of meeting face to face with other collectors and talking rocks.

When the Nashville, Tennessee GIRS show came up on the calendar, I will be honest; I didn’t give it much thought.  It would be an eight hour drive for me, and it was a show I had never attended so I wasn’t sure what to expect or if it was going to be worth the long trip, motel bills and gas money. Face it, anyone who has attended shows for years has at some point driven a long way only to find out the show was smaller than they thought it would be, or it was chalk full of fakes and flea market items, or none of their friends were there.  I really didn’t think too much about it until a friend of mine called and told me he was planning on attending the Nashville show, saying that he had heard through the grapevine that it was a pretty good show to go to.
