Dismal Day

Chuck Elston

Another dismal, overcast, chilly, windy day here in northcentraleastern Tenn.  Spent some time going through my old coin collection that I started when I was riding submarines off the east coast back in the 60's (1960's that is).  Wound up with almost $300 in old US silver dimes, nickles, qtrs and silver dollars.  Might just wind up selling it off cause I don't collect them anymore.  Will probably keep the proof coins I have to pass on to the kids.  Still sorting through my indian rocks to see what I can identify.  Hopefully tomorrow will bring better weather so I can get out on the hunt again.

Slumming Day

Chuck Elston

It's starting to rain again here in Tenn but I have a lot to keep me occupied indoors.  Been sorting through my box of rocks and trying to id arrowheads.  It's a slow, tedious process but interesting to say the least.  I'm learning a lot more than I thought I would, such as flaking patterns, grinding, beveling, and numerous other terminologies.  All part of the process.

Well I managed to get out and about this weekend.  Was truly a beautiful weekend, kinda like spring with temp in the mid 70's and sun shining.  Had a couple of surface finds, which I posted in the forums (In-Situ), a fossil and finds at the dig site, also posted.  Not a bad weekend and I got the exercise that I needed so badly.  Made me a smaller sifter (18" x 18") to use on the dig which is easier to handle and a lot easier on my back.  The older one was about 3' square and boy was it ever heavy.  I'm new at this digging stuff but always seem to find something that keeps me coming back.  Looking forward to more excursions in the very near future..

Slack'n Off

Chuck Elston

Been sittin on the duff lately.  Weather been a bit too cold and windy for my old bones to get out in this and hunt.  The stray cat that showed up about 2 wks ago - showed up again with a leg injury.  It was abcessed pretty bad - so - off to the vet.  After $160 of surgery and meds he's getting back on track.  He'd apparently been a fight'n and got bit.  So - we also had him clipped while we were at it.  Maybe he'll settle down now.  Anyway - been sortin' thru my collection and trying to identify/classify my stuff.  Posting some of them for 2nd opinions as mine doesn't really count for an opinion - yet..  Well - will keep on keep'n on til next time.....

Bummer weather

Chuck Elston

Wow - what a change.  It was pretty nice but windy on tuesday and it rained almost all of wednesday and now it's sleeting with a mix of snow/rain.  Crazy weather but then again it's March.  Went to the big city (Cookeville) to do some shopping with the little lady this AM and intend to spend the rest of the day inside where it's warm and comfy.  Maybe tomorrow or Saturday - I'll try to get out and do a little hunting or maybe back to digging..

Went Hunting Today

Chuck Elston

Well - I couldn't stand it any longer, I braved the cold and went hunting for about 4 hours.  Follow along and I'll take ya with me.  My first stop was to a new area where the trees were cleared out to make pasture.  Still a lot of debris around but there's a couple of good washouts.  I started at the bottem, just beyond the pile of limbs in the lower right of the pic and worked my way up to just about the clump of trees still standing in the upper right.
At about the center of this pic I found a dark grey chip of chert.
So I continued to search up the washout to the right but didn't find anything else the whole hour that I hunted.  But I now know that if I keep coming back, eventually I will find something.
Next I headed about a mile around the other side of the hill to an area that was clear cut about 3 years ago but still has bare spots that wash out when it rains hard.
It gets kinda steep and is a bit hard on the ankles but this is where I have found a large part of my good points.  I was just about to call it quits when I caught a glimpse of grey.  I guess the cows got there first - again.  But mayhaps I'll find the rest of it another time.

As always, it was a fun and relaxing day and I got some good exercise.  So did my 4 wheeler.
